Behind the Death of Queen Bees 2024

Through a collaboration with le ventre, a project space housed in a former synagogue in Hegenheim, France, the exhibition INTERSTICE presented my new work, Behind the Death of Queen Bees. The project traces the history of the building and the persecution of the former Jewish community. Together with the project director/artist Mimi von Moos, we organized the show to critically address Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza and hosted assembly events intended to foster dialogue. For INTERSTICE, I incorporated the buzzing of bees to underscore their conceptual link to drones. I first recognized my fear of bees during a residency in Basel and have since reflected on its causes. The work begins with an analysis of my feelings toward bees and my encounters with dead bees in both my studio and the synagogue. In light of the continuing massacres in Palestine by the Israeli military, I researched the history of the Hegenheim synagogue and cemetery, examining the psychological effects of colonialism on space. Using elements such as the large windows, I created a sound installation that interweaves bee sounds, drones, and architectural history into a narrative.
フランス・エーゲンハイムの旧シナゴーグを改装したプロジェクトスペース「le ventre」との協働により、 展覧会「INTERSTICE」では新作《Behind the Death of Queen Bees》を発表した。本プロジェクト は建築の歴史と、かつてこの地のユダヤ人共同体が受けた迫害を辿るものである。ディレクター／アー ティストのMimi von Moos と共に企画を進め、イスラエルによるガザでの現在進行形のジェノサイド を批評的に捉え、対話の場を開くアッセンブリーも開催した。 本展では、蜂の羽音を取り入れ、ドローン（無人機）という概念との結びつきを強調した。私自身はバー ゼルでのレジデンシー中に蜂への恐怖を自覚し、その理由を考察してきた。本作は、スタジオやシナゴー グで遭遇した蜂の死骸の記憶と、蜂への感情の分析から出発している。パレスチナにおけるイスラエル 軍の虐殺が続く状況を背景に、エーゲンハイムのシナゴーグと墓地の歴史を調査し、植民地主義が空間 にもたらす心理的影響を探究した。大きな窓など建築的要素を生かし、蜂の音、ドローン、建築史を織 り合わせて物語を立ち上げるサウンド・インスタレーションである。
